Wisdom teeth are the teeth located in the back of your mouth and usually develop between the ages of 17 and 25. Often the jaw is not big enough to accommodate the new teeth, leading them to become impacted and causing infection. This in turn causes extreme pain and ultimately, decay. In young people the roots of the wisdom teeth are not fully formed and the surrounding bone is softer, allowing the teeth to be extracted with less pain. If impacted wisdom teeth are not removed, this can also deform the look of other existing teeth in the mouth, possibly leading to further dental procedures in the future.
